Myanmar-EU Relations

07.-09.03.2012, closed dialogue programme

Since the last parliamentarian elections in 2010 and the installation of a civilian government in March 2011 Myanmar has undergone considerable steps towards political change, including the release of political prisoners, the dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi and the conclusion of ceasefire agreements with ethnic groups. The government under President U Thein Sein has committed itself to further social and economic reforms which are widely welcomed by the EU and the international community.

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung has invited a delegation of President Thein Sein’s advisors to visit Brussels from 7 to 9 March 2012. The visit aims at a political dialogue with Members of the European Parliament and representatives of the Council of the EU, the EU Commission and the European External Action Service.

On March 8th at 15-17h FES Brussels is organizing an expert round table (Myanmar and the EU – what the future holds) with our guests. Further discussants include Mr. Seamus Gillespie, Head of EEAS Division South East Asia, representatives of EU member states and ASEAN countries, officials of EU institutions, and analysts of Brussels-based think tanks and NGOs. Participation is only possible upon a personal invitation.
